The co-pilot leaned forward, scowling at the console. “That’s damn strange. I’m not receiving any response from Wormhole Command.”

“Try again,” replied the pilot, “could just be interference. Comms have been experiencing intermittent interruptions ever since the energy spike when the intruder came through from the target planet.”

Naylor stood behind the two crewmembers, his hand on the bulkhead separating the cramped cockpit from the main compartment. “Problem?”

“More comm trouble, sir,” the pilot replied, glancing over her shoulder. “Can’t raise base for clearance to set down.”

The pair of boxy air transports had landed in the abandoned town, one in the weed encrusted parking lot in front of the rec center, the other in the wide street before the hotel.

It had taken six burly troopers to carry an unconscious Grolf from the gym and place him in the capacious vessel. Galindra, Naylor, and Sergeant Flaherty joined them, along with several more soldiers and another of the wounded. Both ships took to the air once the remaining search team personnel had crammed into the additional craft.

A third ship was already on its way to rendezvous with the searchers still in the wilderness, bringing fresh supplies. Naylor ordered them to hold their position for now once they’d been resupplied, until he could determine where their quarry had actually gone and issue new instructions.

Private Kelly had boarded alongside Grolf. Concerned for his condition, she sat near his makeshift stretcher—in fact, a heavy door liberated from the rec center and all that would accommodate his oversized frame, a regular hover gurney being too small. “I’ve done all I can for the other casualties,” she’d told Naylor, “and they’re stable for the time being.”

Her brows scrunched as she held the med-scanner over the troll’s chest. She glanced up at Galindra, who wore a worried look. “Your friend’s status is worsening. I’m guessing the nanites are having a tough time calibrating to his alien body composition. They may yet succeed, but the sooner we have him in the infirmary, the better.”

Galindra overheard the pilot’s dialogue with Naylor and rose from the padded seat. “What’s happening?”

He turned his head. “Not sure. We’re unable to reach flight control at Wormhole Command and will arrive there soon.”

“Captain,” the pilot said, her tone becoming more strident as an alarm squawked and red lights flashed. “I’m reading a massive energy build up.”

“Source?”

“It’s originating from base, sir.” Her voice was tight as she said, “Scans indicate the wormhole is active, but power output is far above normal and still climbing.”

Galindra narrowed her eyes. “I am sensing it, too. Something untoward is occurring.”

Naylor exchanged a hurried glance with her, his forehead furrowed. “I don’t like the sound of this.” He stepped farther into the cockpit. “Get us out of here, Corporal. Order the other transport to abort their landing as well.”

Before the woman could reach for the external comm, the co-pilot yelled, “Energy surge!” He cursed, his fingers flying across the controls. “Power level is off the scale. The carrier wave is going to hit us.”

The pilot swore, stabbed a series of buttons, and hunched over the joystick.
